Program - Community Foundation of NCW

Jim H. introduced Beth Stipe, Executive Director of the Community Foundation of NCW (CFNCW), who talked about the foundation, and our club foundation.  The CFNCW manages charitable endowments, which have grown to $58 M in the 30 years of its existence.  About 150 scholarships totaling $500,000 were awarded last year from 1500 applications

Beth talked about the Marv & Fran Salisbury Fund, started by the late, former member and his wife.  Their $50,000 matching start-up donation has now grown to $170,000, and provides enough interest each year to fund one of our Challenge Scholars.
We also have a Donor Advised Fund in the CFNCW, which can be used to support our scholarships or other charitable causes.  That fund is now at $21,000.

Beth also talked about disaster relief for the fire victims in the Pateros/Alta Lake area.  With no help from FEMA, services are needed from local resources.  $300,000 have been raised in our area, and will be coordinated by the CFNCW.  Social service providers will be contracted to help for 12-24 months with case management and resources, while the CFNCW will be used for fund disperwments.

Back From Brazil

Greta Schock was sponsored by our club this past year as a youth exchange student to Brazil.  She showed pictures and talked about her year in Brazil.  The highlight was meeting all the people, and youth exchange students from around the world.  Her year included trips to many places in Brazil and the Amazon, as well as  to neighboring countries.  Greta also talked about the culture, food, and wildlife.  She really enjoyed her year, and was very appreciative of Rotary, and our club.  Great left right after the meeting for Colorado University, where she will be attending this year.

Our Money at Work

Here's Wayne with Martha Rodriquez, Student Coordinator at the Literacy Council of Chelan and Douglas Counties at the 2014 school supply distribution. The roll-up banner was purchased with the $350 our club donated to the Literacy Council earlier this year.

District Governor Visit

DG Bruce Falkins and his wife Donna from Kelowna, BC, made their official visit to our club last Tuesday. Bruce was introduced by Assistant Governor Robb Tidd.  Bruce talked about having pride in Rotary, and gave his story.  He also talked about RI President Gary Huang's focus this year on growing our clubs, the importance of membership, and how to attract new members.

DG Bruce recognized Jim Adamson and Bill McDowell as being membership champions in the club (as designaed by the Board). He has 4-Way Test coins and Canadian maple sugar lollipops to give tho them.

Bruce also encouraged everyone to come to the District Training Weekend in Osoyoos, BC, on Oct. 31-Nov. 1, and to the District Conference on June 18-21 in Kelowna, BC.  Both are opportunities to meet Rotarians from around the district, to learn more about Rotary, enjoy a family outing, see a beautiful part of Canada, and make new friends.  Our club has funds to help pay for registrations for these events.

Award for Leonard Noss

Alan Walker presented Leonard with the Mark Anderson Presidential Service Award ("Marky" Award), which is given each year to a member who exemplifies service above self.  The winner was announced at the changeover dinner in June, but Leonard was recovering from surgery at that time.  Leonard has been our club historian for many years, and has been regular in his attendance at our meetings.

Social at the Orchard

Over 50 people showed up at Utigard's orchard for an old fashioned BBQ of turkey, pork, and beef slow-roasted on the spit.  Former member Mark Anderson, and wife Nancy, were visiting Wenatchee and Mark helped coordinate the roast.  Our members were joined by Helga Fortescue, Barb Wilson, and Lorraine Church (all widows of former members), former members Diana Oltman, Craig Reese (and wife Tracy), Kris Pomianek (and husband Charlie), and several other guests and family members.  Lots of  great food and fellowship, swimming, and dog watching.  Thanks to Bill McDowell and the fellowship committee for putting the BBQ on.
